The Writer's Life 5/10 - Phenomena & Fidgeting

There is an interesting phenomenon occurring on the California coast. Phytoplankton are microscopic marine algae, the base of several aquatic food webs, similar to terrestrial plants in that they contain chlorophyll and require sunlight in order to live and grow. Here's a pic:

The left's opposition to Gina Haspel as CIA chief is understandable. Anyone nominated by Trump will be opposed, even the eminently qualified, as she clearly is. Curious as to how the issue is polling, I googled it and found these results at lehighvalleylive.com: 340 (71.5%) are in favor of her appointment, 129 (27.1%) against. Granted, it is a tiny sample, but it is what I expected - only much higher. I'd thought it would be a 55-45% break. I doubt the general public is as outraged by torture as staunch liberals are. As I've said before, if there are rumors of an attack, I'm all for it and relieved there are people committed enough to do it. And the U.S. is the only country that requires a doctor to be present while it's being done.

So - is the latest info on  Michael Cohen, Trump's lawyer in the Stormy Daniels scandal, a big break in the collusion case or more hot air? He is accused of taking big bucks from a Russian oligarch who has ties to Putin. When I first heard the news, it sounded like the special counsel finally had something substantial. I've since heard from a few of the president's defenders that it's more malarkey, fake news, if you will. Time will tell.

Sales at the floating book shop were again pathetic today, but donations poured in. My thanks to the woman who selected two paperback thrillers at a steep discount, and to the young one who bought Suze Orman's The Courage to Be Rich, and to the gentleman who purchased Murder at Montparnasse by Howard Engel and Geoffrey Howard . I received a bunch of non-fiction from a woman who probably had bought it all from me, and one from retired cabbie Alan. Lev, who donated more than 400 books last spring, pulled his van to the curb and handed me three bags full of CD's and DVD's, probably 100 total. Problem was, very few were in sleeves. I spent a good deal of time sorting through them, separating those too damaged to sell, which I discarded. I did the same with the porn. Although I have no objection to it, I will not risk the good will I've built by selling items some folks would find objectionable. Many of the discs look like copies or bootlegs. I will peddle them at a steep discount. 15-20% were unfamiliar or vaguely titled. I'm not sure if they're music or film. I'll feed them to the computer... I had one of those uncomfortable moments that, fortunately, are few and far between. A man fidgeting like mad stopped and scanned the display. If there's a world record for fidgeting, he must hold it. He picked up a few books, handling them roughly. While he was thumbing through Present and Past I told myself to be cool, as it would only be a loss of less than ten bucks, since I would be able to sell a damaged copy at a discount. I didn't care what he did with any of the others books. Fortunately, he didn't stay long.
