The Writer's Life 7/1 - Role Playing

Last night MeTV, 33 on Cablevision in NYC, ran The Leech Woman (1960), a forgettable horror flick. In researching the cast, I found a great bit of trivia about one of the supporting players. Actually, it seems stupid to call it trivia. Born in Holland, John Van Dreelen claims to have escaped from a concentration camp dressed as a Nazi officer. As fans of '60's TV know, Van Dreelen often played Nazi officers on popular TV shows - art imitating life. He was comfortable on the big and small screen, and the stage. There are 158 titles listed under his name at IMDb. He made multiple appearances on many programs on both sides of the Atlantic. He passed away in 1992 at 70. Here's a pic of him in an episode of Twelve O'Clock High:

From Yahoo Sports, in my own words: In his last five at-bats, relief pitcher Michael Lorenzen, 26, has singled, homered as a pinch-hitter, walked, homered and, last night, hit a grand slam as a pinch-hitter. In 65 career plate appearances, he has five homers and a .271 BA. Over four seasons, he has appeared in 147 games as a pitcher, 21 as a starter. His career ERA is 4.34. He plays a dual role for the suddenly surging Cincinnati Reds.

Here's the headline from an article at Yahoo Sports: "Tim Tebow set to be 3rd-worst performing hitter on Double-A All-Star team." As the media often does - accentuate the negative. Oh how I hope Tebow makes it to the bigs. It would be so sweet to hear the haters whine. In the role of yahoo at YS - it will be listed as "Uncredited" here.

And in the role of crazy person - yours truly. Day three of the heat wave was brutal, as bad as it ever gets in NYC. I had a decision to make: stay home and do a crossword puzzle or set up shop under a tree and try to earn a few bucks. Naturally I chose the latter. Fortunately there was an occasional breeze blowing along Bay Parkway, a tiny bit of relief. I took my time setting up the display, just as I do while shoveling snow. I brought a one-liter bottle of Dasani that was on sale for a buck. It's still half full. I don't know how people drink so much water. My thanks to the young woman who bought Kathleen Woodiwiss' Forever in Your Embrace, and to Mr. Conspiracy, who pounced on a large pictorial on sailing; and to Monsie, who so enjoyed the mood CD she bought yesterday, she came back for two more.
