The Writer's Life 9/8 - Bugged

From Yahoo's Odd News, edited by yours truly: A Swiss supermarket chain has begun selling burgers and balls made from insects, a legal first in Europe. About one-third of the burger is mealworm larvae. The chain says the products have been flying off shelves during limited roll-out. A broader launch is planned by year's end. A change in Swiss law allows the sale of three types of insects: mealworm larvae, house crickets and migratory locusts. Insects had already hit the shelves in Belgium, Britain, Denmark and the Netherlands, but that was due to a legal void in European Union rules. Legislation taking effect in January will smooth the way for bug burgers to turn up across the EU. A spokeswoman claims insect burgers and balls "have been very successful from day one and have been sold out quickly everywhere." The burger itself has little white specks of rice inside with traces of carrot, paprika, chili powder and pepper. Like the meat variety, it may be accompanied by buns, tomatoes and lettuce. Insect balls, a mixture of mealworms with cilantro, onions and chickpeas, seem to fit best in pita bread, perhaps with a spoonful of yogurt. The U.N.'s Food and Agricultural Organization has promoted insect consumption, saying the buggers are healthy and high in protein and minerals. The agency claims many types of insects produce less greenhouse gases and ammonia than most livestock and require less land and money to cultivate. Enjoy:

I hope a bug substitute for pizza will never hit the market. I just enjoyed a couple of slices from a local shop. How 'bout a mealworm larvae topping for ice cream? Or a side dish of crickets and locusts? Will they be available in a supermarket's frozen food or deli section? Will an organization be formed to prevent cruelty to insects - SPCI? Will a new arm be added to the Animal Rights organizations? Will the consumption of bugs become so popular that the insect population will be depleted, threatening the planet's ecological balance? Will bugs band together and begin attacking humans? Stephen King and James Patterson would have a new subject for novels.

While Texas recovers from Hurricane Harvey and Florida braces for Hurricane Irma and perhaps Jose, NYC enjoyed yet another day of ideal weather in what has been a spectacular summer. My thanks to the kind folks who bought books, reducing the massive inventory by ten or so. I also left three obscure hardcover novels in the lobby of our co-op. Fortunately, there were no surprise donations today. Although my car wasn't very far, it was hard work setting up and breaking down the display the past two sessions. My back gets fatigued in a way it never has before. Such is the aging process.
