The Writer's Life 9/5 - Extraordinary Feats

Out of work? Looking to earn extra? I just heard a promising ad on the radio. There's a new website that leads members to temporary jobs, such as cleaning out a basement or hauling away trash. I didn't sign up, so I don't know any more other than that it involves an app. Go here: https://www.takl.com

Jake Olson is not an ordinary college football player. He lost his eyesight to cancer when he was twelve. Despite this, he was the long snapper on his high school team, and also a golfer. He shoots in the 70's - eat your heart out hackers. On Saturday, USC up 48-31 on my alma mater, Western Michigan, he made the snap on the Trojans' 49th point, and was mobbed by teammates. Before allowing Olson to play, USC’s doctors needed an okay from WMU head coach Tim Lester, which was done in a phone conversation  USC's head man Clay Helton. Lester said: "I didn’t think it was a hard decision at all. It was bigger than the game. I was happy to be a part of it." Kudos. Here's a picture of this extraordinary young man being led onto the field by a teammate:

From Yahoo Sports, in my own words: RF J. D. Martinez, 30, of the Arizona Diamondbacks struck out in his first at-bat last night in L.A.. In the fourth inning he hit a long two-run homer to the left field bleachers. He went on to smack solo blasts in the seventh and eighth, and a two-run shot in the ninth to secure a place in MLB history. Each of the four dingers came off a different pitcher. He finished the game 4-for-5 with six RBIs. He is the second player to accomplish the rare feat this season. Scooter Gennett of the Reds did it against the Cardinals on June 6th, driving in 10 runs. It has been done six times in the AL, 12 in the NL. Here's baseball's man of the hour:

With parking unavailable near my usual book nook, I took the show to the Sheepshead Bay concourse. For the first time in a while it was a session of no sales. At least it was a beautiful day, especially when the breeze kicked up. I was curbside to the left of the bridge below, which is in the process of being painted maroon.
