The Writer's Life 10/7 - Nuts

Yesterday I neglected to mention the driver who was waiting for the change of light on Avenue Z at E.13th. Gray-haired, he had the stereo blasting and was singing along, loudly, to Barry McGuire’s 60’s classic, Eve of Destruction. I wondered if he was simply groovin’ to a great track, waxing nostalgic, or making a comment on the world at present. It’s comforting to know there are people out there who sing as badly as I do.

Last night at eight The Flash premiered on the WB. It was solid, nothing more. As expected these days, the effects were terrific. I chuckled when Jesse L. Martin appeared as a detective, a role for which he has a lot of experience, having done 198 episodes of the original Law & Order. I doubt I bought more than one Flash comic as a boy, so I was particularly interested in his back story and how he came to acquire his powers. I’ll give it at least one more look. My bias is toward Batman, which is why I enjoy Gotham so much, even though the Caped Crusader is years from emerging in the series.

Sign of the times: Lakeland Industries has rallied 91% in 2014. It’s trading just above ten bucks. What has piqued the interest of investors? The company manufactures Hazmat suits! To buy or not to buy, that is the question - in terms of the actual product and the stock.

Sanford Rubenstein made his bones as a civil rights lawyer, often a thorn in the side of the NYPD. He is frequently in the company of Al Sharpton, whose 60th birthday party he attended. Afterward, he left with a couple of women. One has accused him of rape. He is 70, the woman 42. Authorities must be relishing this investigation, digging extra hard for dirt. Of course, the press is in glory, merciless. One article stated Rubenstein is “hung like a cashew.” Imagine going through such humiliation publicly -- and he may not even be guilty. The accusation may simply be a maneuver to get into his deep pockets. Then again, perhaps it’s karma.

There was some action as I made my way along the home stretch of my morning walking, NY Post and hot dog buns from the Chinese bakery in tow. A tall black man backed out of a convenience store, left arm cocked above his head, ready to hurl a bottle of Snapple at someone he was regaling with familiar epithets. He broke into a sprint and, a moment later, a young Arabic man came running outside brandishing an aluminum baseball bat. He brushed past me and went in pursuit of what I suspect was a thief. I continued on my way.

My thanks to the two people who bought books today. It's tough going right now. I have a lot of good works, but lack the most popular sellers, and I've sold out my Russian inventory.
