The Writer's Life 10/6 - Kicks

RIP Paul Revere Dick, 76, founding member of Paul Revere & the Raiders, who succumbed to cancer. He played keyboards. The vocalist became so popular the band, which shuffled personnel many times, was later billed with an addendum: “Featuring Mark Lindsay.” Whatever. They rocked. They frequently appeared, lip-synching, on Dick Clark productions. Their best work has stood the test of time. Here’s a list of their songs that cracked the Top Ten:
Indian Reservation #1 for one week in 1971. Early political correctness. My least favorite of their most popular tracks.
Kicks #4 in 1966. A great rock n roll record, written by Barry Mann & Cynthia Weill, inspired by the drug problem of their friend Gerry Goffin, Carol King’s husband and writing partner at the time.
Hungry #6 in 1966.
Just Like Me #11 in 1966. Okay, it just missed the top ten, but it’s well-worthy of praise.
Good Thing #4 in 1967.
Him or Me -- What’s It Gonna Be? #5 in 1967. I have zero recollection of it, even after watching a live performance posted at youtube. It pales considerably to this:

I really enjoy Resurrection, which airs Sundays at nine on ABC, but last night I got to thinking: Where are they going with this? I don't see how it can last much longer just by bringing more people back from the dead. A resolution must be found. Then again, Under the Dome has garnered enough ratings to snare a third season, despite a dragged out story line.

For the third straight week I was unable to find a reasonable parking spot in Park Slope and set up shop on Bay Parkway, where two last minute sales made the effort worthwhile. My thanks to those gentlemen and to the Russian woman who asked for easy reads in English. I showed her children's books, which she nixed, and then two Harlequin novels, which she bought. I think the solution to the Park Slope problem will parking a long way off and hauling half the wares I usually set out. It's odd that I sometimes forget my main reason for doing this is to sell copies of my own books.
