The Writer's Life 10/2 - Umbrellas

The Ebola scare, the security breach at the White House, and the bombing of ISIS have been such big stories that another equally as big has been shunted to the side. People are taking to the streets of Hong Kong, protesting the infringement of the Chinese government on the city of millions. When the Brits handed the province back to the country in 1999, part of the agreement called for the status quo to remain in place for 50 years. Elections were to be open. The Communists now want full authority on who will be on the ballot. The symbol of the protest is the umbrella, which many are carrying. Although it has been peaceful, tear gas has been fired. Pundits believe this is yardstick that will measure whether democracy will ever be possible in that rising power.

Since I have a basic cable package, I miss out on many popular shows. I don’t like to binge watch, so I don’t add them to my list at Netflix. To my surprise, My 9 is airing the wildly popular The Walking Dead in back to back episodes on Wednesday night at eight. I’m not sure if these are edited versions, but I was impressed. I didn’t spot any choppiness. Then again, prime time TV has become so violent that I might have been wrong to expect the cutting of graphic scenes. If any profanity was bleeped, I didn’t notice. It is refreshing not to have to hear an overabundance of cussing, especially in over the top entertainment without serious intent. As for the content, it is pretty much what I expected, but well-executed. Only two actors were familiar: Jeffrey DeMunn and Michael Rooker, whose faces most people would recognize. If better alternatives do not pop up at that time, I will keep watching, breaking my vow to skip the played out themes of zombies, vampires and gangsters.
My 9 will be running repeats of one of my favorite recent series, The Mentalist, beginning tonight at eight. It ran seven seasons on CBS. Unlike most fans, I prefer the light-hearted episodes rather than the Red John arc. They are silly fun and Simon Baker is perfect in the lead. I also enjoy the personalities of the supporting players. I don’t recall exactly when I started watching the show, so I’m interested in viewing the first few episodes, the only ones I may have missed.

It looks like the floating book shop is in the beginning of a slump, especially since Yom Kippur is imminent and rain is predicted for Saturday. My thanks to the two gentlemen who purchased books today.
