The Writer's Life 10/10 - Chips Ahoy

I was impressed with episode two of Gracepoint, which aired last night on Fox at nine. The writers introduced a psychic possibility that doesn’t seem forced, and elements that may be evidence or red herrings. I am enjoying the manipulations of the beautiful reporter from nearby San Francisco. It's hard to tell whether she's a beacon of truth, an unscrupulous sleaze, or a combination of both. Will the lead investigator’s personal problems turn out to be a sordid padding of the story or compelling drama? Will the young priest be stereotyped? Despite these questions, I am intrigued and look forward to the next installment. If the network and creators stick to the original twelve episode arc, Gracepoint may be a great series. With ten left, I have no clue who committed the murder. The series' website asks fans who they think did it. The vote is spread between several of the characters, including the old salt played by Nick Nolte, who is now 73. His appearance is shocking. I wonder how much of that is acting and how much is actual. His breakout role was in the landmark mini-series Rich Man, Poor Man in 1976, although he did many guest star spots on television before that. He has battled back from alcoholism. Here's a quote attributed to him, culled from IMDb: "I never felt comfortable in real life very well. It's always been an awkward kind of thing for me and so when I hit the stage I just sensed freedom. I sensed here's a place that I can have all the experiences of life and not feel uncomfortable about it." Here are pics as he once was and how he appears in Gracepoint:

For the second straight session the floating book shop had a visit from Occupy Jack. He was in rare form, riffing on and on, offering solutions for all the world's trouble spots. Before he left, he said: "Screw Columbus, but God bless the Italian-American people." Actually, he didn't use "screw."

My thanks to the kind folks who bought books, especially the middle aged woman who gave me a little bag of chocolate chip cookies.
