The Writer's Life 4/7 - Hodgepodge

In an article in the NY Post on the burgeoning Panama Papers scandal, that list of rich folks who are allegedly hiding assets, Seth Lipsky suggests they lock their financial data on an Iphone. We all know leftists will be as vigilant defending that data as they were of the San Bernardino terrorist's. Kudos, sir. It will be interesting to see the names that pop up on the list. My guess it will be an equal breakdown of left, right, middle. Cheating is universal.

In an op-ed piece, George Will lauds the efficiency of Ted Cruz's campaign. It is not surprising. Cruz is the smartest and most qualified of the candidates on both sides. Unfortunately, he is unlikable. Then again, Tricky Dick Nixon won two national elections, despite being despised by the left, who never forgave him for his work during the McCarthy hearings, and despite his support of several liberal initiatives, such as wage and price controls, environmental restrictions, and opening relations with Red China.

The baseball season is not even a week old and already there have been two of the wonderful marvels the 162 game schedule invariably produces. Colorado's rookie shortstop Trevor Story has broken an MLB record by homering in the first three games. All four of his hits have been HR's. Kudos, kid... On the negative side of the spectrum, the San Diego Padres have been shut out for their first 27 innings of 2016, breaking the previous record of 26.

RIP country music legend Merle Haggard, 79. He produced dozens of albums and #1 hits, despite a long battle with alcohol abuse. I have a special fondness for his most famous song, Okie from Muskogee. When a buxom blonde co-ed of Irish ancestry told me she smoked pot, a square like me was unable to resist singing that song's wonderfully naive opening line: "We don't smoke marijuana in Muskogee..." Kathy is not one of my big two, but I remember her fondly and wonder how her life has gone and if she has been happy. I'll run a search on Facebook, hoping there aren't hundreds of women with the same name. She might not even remember me. We did not know each other long. The effect of music on individuals is so fascinating. Thank you, Mr Haggard.

My favorite sporting event, The Masters, is underway. How I hope Sunday's back nine will produce its typical high drama.

The floating book shop was open less than an hour today before the rain came. My thanks to Cabbie, who did a book swap, eight thrillers for three Vince Flynns. I charged him only a buck. I want him to keep doing it, as I eventually come out ahead on the deals.
