The Writer's Life 4/11 - Men at Work

Kudos to Officer Brian Stockbrind, a policeman in a small New Jersey town. In a ten day period he saved three lives, performing CPR on two women, and pulling a man from a burning vehicle. "I was just doing my job," he said.

A Taiwan-born naturalized U. S. citizen serving as an officer in the Navy has been accused of espionage, attempted espionage, and prostitution. I don't know about those first two, but the third really gets my dander up.

Colorado Rockies' rookie shortsop Trevor Story has hit seven home runs in the first six games of the season. At this pace... Nah!

Looks as simple as it is beautiful, doesn't it? As usual The Masters provided the incredible. Jordan Spieth seemed to be cruising to his second consecutive green jacket as he made the turn toward the back nine. Five shots ahead, he bogeyed the 10th and 11th, and had a quadruple bogey at the 150-yard par-three 12th. In front of a huge gallery and millions watching on TV, he briefly turned into a weekend hacker. How? The know-it-alls in the media insist it was a choke. While I wouldn't argue that nerves had nothing to do with it, especially after his tee shot went into Rae's Creek, sometimes things just go bad. He rallied from that brutal stretch with birdies at 13 and 15. Was that an anti-choke? His miss of the short birdie putt at 16 must have taken a lot out of him. His loss was Danny Willet's gain. The Brit, ranked 12th in the world, was the last entry into the storied tournament. His wife's due date was yesterday, but she had the baby ten days early. As for other notables: Brit Lee Westwood was bridesmaid, tied with Spieth, for the umpteenth time; Dustin Johnson is arguably the best player in the world -- until he picks up his putter; and Rory McIlroy will have to wait 'til next year for a chance to complete golf's Grand Slam.

My thanks to Mira, who bought six kid's books she will read to her three-year-old son, the lady who bought two on The Lion King for her granddaughter, and the gentleman who bought the book on healthy cooking, and also to the one who donated a batch of Debbie Macomber romances, and the mother and daughter who donated a fine mix of fiction and non, and a whole bunch of DVDs. I am armed and dangerous, locked and loaded.
