The Writer's Life 4/13 - Foul Balls

The following four items were gleaned from today's NY Post: Drivers in New York and New Jersey pay one-third of all tolls in the USA. It's highway robbery... Bartenders in Cuba are complaining of a shortage of beer, which they blame on the influx of American tourists. I doubt they're ready to cry "Yankee go home"... South Korean politicians are buying the votes of elderly males by offering Viagra-like products. That's one way to get your poll or pole numbers up... NYC mayor Bill de Blasio is catching some mild heat for an off-color joke he concocted with Hillary Clinton at a recent function. He used the term "C P Time" (Colored People). Imagine the firestorm if Trump or Cruz used it. The double standard is permissible because everyone knows liberals are only joking and conservatives are evil.

The speed limit in many areas of Brooklyn is 25, which is almost impossible to adhere to when traffic is moving steadily. I usually do 30-35 and approach 40 occasionally on major thoroughfares. I'm surprised I haven't received a ticket in these times of gluttonous government over-reach. If I do get one, I won't feel any better if the officer blames the mayor, tax-happy stooge though he may be. A local cop has been suspended for blaming de Blasio after he issued a ticket for loud music. The driver, who clandestinely filmed the incident, complained vehemently. I have no sympathy for someone who can retire after just 20 years and immediately begin drawing a healthy pension that includes Cadillac benefits. Why not say: "Turn down the stereo or I'll have to give you a ticket"?

An article at Yahoo Sports details the luck a guy had at the Tigers-Pirates game on Monday. Bill Dugan, 39, caught five foul balls -- six if you count the one he snared during BP. He was seated behind home plate and had lots of room to rove because of the sparse turnout. He caught three on the fly and two caroms. He claims to have snagged more than 200 through the years. In a 2002 game vs. Seattle, he bagged four. Maybe it wasn't luck.

My thanks to the gentleman who bought Stephen King's Four Past Midnight and the lady who purchased a Panera Bread baking book.
