The Writer's Life 1/3 - Reflections

Herman Wouk has written many best sellers and has had several adapted to the big and small screen, The Caine Mutiny (1954) the best of them, But his most impressive book may be his current one: Sailor and Fiddler, Reflections of a 100-Year-Old Writer. He is an inspiration to all writers. Thank you, sir.

Here's a new acronym: FANG. It stands for four companies whose stocks have bolstered the economy and the indexes where they are listed: Facebook, up 37% in 2015; Amazon, up 123%; Netflix, up 144%, Google, up 48%. I sold Facebook at a nice profit, but I probably should have held on to it. Amazon involved the biggest financial mistake I've ever made. I bought it at 66, saw it slump all the way to ten, and sold it at 25. I had only 25 shares, so the dollar loss wasn't that great in the grand scheme of things. Six months to a year after I gave up on it, Steve Jobs was back at the helm and the music storage innovations began with the IPOD, and stock began to and has continued to soar. I haven't tabulated how much that mistake cost me, but I'd bet it's at least ten grand. As for Netflix and Google, I was using and loving them long before their stocks went public, yet I balked at investing in them. I am the creator of my own income inequality. No risk, no reward -- this is something leftists don't understand. They believe they are entitled to the fruits others have taken risks to achieve.

While reading an article on Madonna's parenting frustrations, one word popped into my mind: "Karma," but that isn't really fair or accurate. She is simply suffering what almost all moms and dads do. Being an ultra-liberal doesn't make parenting any easier. Are there any kids who don't rebel in some way, no matter what their parents believe or how wise their advice?

It was one of those days when things went right for the floating book shop. As soon as I hit the lobby on my way out this morning, Izzy was on his way in. He invited me up to his apartment and gave me a bag full of children's books and two lovely pictorials. The problem today was the wind. The temperature wasn't bad, in the mid 40's, but I needed sunshine to negate the effects of the breeze, which meant that setting up shop in front of John Jay H.S. was out, as the sidewalk there is cast in shade until at least one PM. I recalled that the sun bathed the corner of 9th St. most of the day. I found a parking spot below 5th Av. and then was faced with whether to set up shop right there beside my car in front of a post office or to the lug the crates about 100 yards to the Chase bank at the corner. Although I should have chosen the latter, things worked out well, and I'll know better next time. For a while it looked like the kids' books were all that would sell, then Maria came along and bought A Hitch in Twilight. My thanks, and to all the other buyers, and to Izzy.
