The writer's Life 1/11 - Let's Dance

RIP rock legend David Bowie, 69, who succumbed to cancer. Born David Jones, he changed his name to avoid being confused with the Monkees' Davy Jones. For some reason, he chose the name of the famous American frontiersman. He was one of the most innovative and flamboyant music stars ever, undergoing many changes during his long career, from his early glam days to his jazz-influenced last album, Blackstar, released just two days before his death. His song-writing was unique, unusual. I counted 28 albums listed under his name at Wiki. His work was most popular in his native UK, but several of his albums cracked the Top Ten in the states. He even had two #1 singles in the U.S., Fame, a duet with John Lennon, and Let's Dance, which topped the Hot 100 chart. He was out front at the beginning of the video era. Many of those shorts, such as Ashes to Ashes, are more than record promotion. He was outstanding in live performance. He has 38 credits listed under Actor at IMDb, and an incredible 452 under Soundtrack. Here is my favorite clip of him, a wonderfully staged rendition of Bang Bang from the Glass Spider tour. No rock star was more graceful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrrJbf4hRFM Well done, sir.

NFL: The last two minutes of the Bengals-Steelers game was a microcosm of the fortunes of these two franchises, especially in head to head meetings, with Cincinnati snatching defeat from the jaws of victory... The Seahawks have been so lucky the past two years, and good... I know he makes a lot of money, but I feel sorry for the Vikings field goal kicker, Blair Walsh. Man, that has to be tough to endure... The Chiefs look strong but lost their most valuable receiver... Is the Pack back or did they just take advantage of an inexperienced opponent? My hunch is it's the latter... For the first time, all four road teams won in the opening round... Will the Patriots have healed sufficiently by game time next weekend? I wouldn't bet against them... The most intriguing match-up is Seattle-Carolina... I'll be surprised if any of the games is a blowout. It may come down to who's healthiest.

Since the threat of rain prevented me from taking the floating book shop to Park Slope yesterday, I decided to go there today, and it worked out well. The chief concern was the stiff wind. I minimized it by setting up against the wall of the Chase bank at the corner of 5th Av. & 9th St., where the sunshine hits for many hours. I did not feel cold until late in the session. My thanks to the kind folks who bought books, especially lovely young Alexis, who purchased A Hitch in Twilight.
