The Writer's Life 10/8 - On a Roll

I have not taken MLB’s post season seriously since the wild card was introduced. It handicaps the team’s that demonstrated the most excellence during the season. I probably won’t watch more than a few outs of the playoffs here and there. But I still marvel at the individual skill of the players. Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta, 29, has been on an unbelievable run, which continued yesterday with his four-hit shutout of the Pirates, in which he struck out eleven, issued no walks, and hit 97 mph on the radar gun. His post All-Star game ERA is 0.75! On the season he was 22-6, 1.77 ERA. He allowed only 150 hits in 229 innings, holding the opposition to a .185 BA. He struck out 236, one per inning. Amazing, sir.

A few weeks ago I mentioned that I believed the Dodgers were the most favorable matchup for the Mets. We’ll soon see. I hope this isn’t the year Clayton Kershaw rectifies whatever previously has vanquished his excellence in the playoffs.

My former Exchange buddy Joey Kay recommended a book by one of his old friends: From Hopeless to Hollywood: The Mario Bosco Story. It’s available at Amazon, print or Kindle. Check it out here: http://www.amazon.com/hopeless-Hollywood-Mario-Bosco-Story/dp/163367102X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1444304595&sr=1-1&keywords=mario+bosco
It all worked out today. I accompanied a friend to a doctor's appointment, which netted me cash and a free lunch, and still had plenty of time for the floating book shop. Last night Lou, our stellar super, gave me a large bag of books. Among them were several by Danielle Steel, of whom Marsha is a big fan. She carries a list of the novels she's read and consulted it before selecting four. My thanks, and to all the other kind folks who bought and donated books. I spotted Dr. Lee approaching in her light green hospital garb and bicycle helmet. I picked up a book on Chinese women who had suffered under communism and left the country, and asked if she would be interested, hoping she wouldn't be offended if it turned out she was Korean or Japanese. She sucked in a breath of joy and thanked me. Whew! Maybe someday I'll have the nerve to ask why she wears the helmet. The best part of the day is my diminished back pain. Tomorrow I'll try to go without ibuprofen.
