The Writer's Life 10/6 - Kudos

Kudos to Bon Jovi, who recently played a concert in Tel Aviv, sticking it to Roger Watters and the rest of the yahoos urging people to boycott Israel. Kudos also to Kanye West, who played a show there a few days earlier.

I never thought I'd be saying this, but kudos to President Obama in helping get the eleven nation Trans Pacific Partnership trade deal finalized. Now he has to convince members of congress, especially those of his own party, who are hostile to free trade because of union ties, to pass it. Republicans should put partisanship aside and vote for it, unless there are factors in it that I don't understand. There hasn't been much from pundits on it yet.

NFL Week 4: Atlanta, Carolina, Cincinnati and Denver are undefeated, but I doubt any of them will seriously challenge the Packers or Patriots. Are the Bengals and QB Andy Dalton finally ready to step up to the next level, or are they merely teasing -- again? The Seahawks look as if they have retreated to a lesser level. The Dolphins were expected to be contenders. Why have they been awful? Was it simply the head coach, whom they fired? It's usually more than that. I expected the Giants to be thrashed in Buffalo. With Tony Romo sidelined indefinitely and the Eagles playing poorly, the playoffs seem a distinct possibility for Big Blue, although the wins they should have had in the first two games may haunt them down the road. The Jets are good. As I've said many times, the NFL is a brutal war of attrition. The only team that seems to have no trouble overcoming a rash of them is New England. Even when Tom Brady missed virtually an entire season, they made the playoffs behind Matt Cassell.

As for the baseball playoffs, the only team I don't think has a shot at the World Series is the Rangers. My hatred of the wild card and the Yankees will keep me from watching any of it.

It was a picture book day weather-wise. My thanks to Herbie, who donated three novels in Lawrence Sander's Deadly Sin series, and to the woman who gave me eight VHS tapes, including one on Mickey Mouse, which was the only sale of the day. A man and, later, a woman asked how long I'd be open. I told them two, stayed until 2:30, and neither returned. It's almost a 100% certainty that those who say they will return will not. The only down side to the day was that I tweaked my back while squatting to organize the wares. I'm hoping it isn't the start of an episode, but I'm afraid it is. I've taken two Ibuprofen in the hopes of heading it off, but a significant back issue isn't dismissed so easily. It just has to play itself out.
