The Writer's Life 10/5 - Potpourri

Jackson Hole H.S. in Wyoming has a tradition of celebrating America Day during Homecoming Week. This year it was cancelled by officials who feared offending students who felt shut out. Juniors and Seniors responded by wearing pro America garb to school. Kudos, kids.

I just did a survey on politics, which mentioned a new Free Market Environmental policy put forth by the Obama administration. It sounds too good to be true. Leftists are the biggest enemies of free markets. I wonder if this is a rhetorical trick to drum up support for the same ol’ same ol’ in another form. I haven’t heard a thing about it in op-ed pieces, and I look forward to reading the opinions of those pundits I respect. Who knows, maybe it's actually a good idea?

Just read shocking news that Yankees pitcher C.C. Sabathia has entered rehab for alcohol abuse. It must be serious if he did it on the cusp of the post season. I wonder if this explains his on field struggles the past two years. Good luck, sir.

Since a crew was tearing up the sidewalk in front of the Chase bank, I moved the floating book shop a half block to the corner of 84th Street. I didn't sell a thing, but an old timer and his wife donated five paperbacks, so the day wasn't a total loss. Mike, the custodian of the huge apartment building that takes up the entire stretch between the corners of 83rd and 84th, hung out with me for quite a bit, slowly drinking a 20 ounce Diet Pepsi, his addiction. He was hugged and kissed by Steve, aka Conspiracy Guy, who ragged him for not ever having come through with his promise of his mother's pasteles. When school was dismissed, several elementary students showed Mike a lot of love, each asking to slap five. He knew all their names. It was nice to see. He teased a middle age female resident, accusing her of having spied on him from her window, saying he felt her eyes on him. He got pissed when a woman pulled over to the curb and asked for large trash bags. "I'm out," he said. The woman just sold her co-op for $300,000 and she was looking for a freebie.
