The Writer's Life 10/12 - Last Words

According to Lifedaily.com, these were the last words, morbid yet fascinating, of the following celebrities:
Steve Jobs: “Oh, wow.” (Did he see what was on the other side, or were painkillers having him hallucinate?)
Kurt Cobain: “It’s better to burn out than fade away.” (A line from Neil Young’s Out of the Blue and into the Black.)
Bob Marley: “Money can’t buy life.” (If it could, no celebrity would die young of disease.)
Elvis: “I’m going to the bathroom to read.”
Princess Di: “Oh my God.” (According to a fireman on the scene.)
Sinatra: “I’m losing.”
Joe DiMaggio: “I finally get to see Marilyn.”
Michael Jackson: “More milk.” (Metaphor for the anesthetic Propofol, on which he O.D.‘d)
John Lennon: “Yes, I am.” (When asked by a cop in the patrol car rushing him to the hospital.)
Bob Hope: “Surprise me.” (To his wife when she asked where he wanted to be buried.)
James Brown: “I’m going away tonight.”
Churchill: “Oh, I’m so bored with it all.”
Gary Coleman: “I love you and my head hurts.” (To his ex-girlfriend)
Pete Maravich: “I feel great.” (During a pickup basketball game. He was 40.)
Alfred Hitchcock: “One never knows the ending. One has to die to know exactly what happens after death, although Catholics have their hopes.”

The floating book shop had a good day. I got a convenient parking spot immediately at the corner of Bay Parkway and 84th. As I hauled the first two crates to the other the side of the street, I saw Mike, a local super, following with the other two. "You my man," he said when I protested that he didn't have to do that. He brought them all the way to the tree in front of Chase, which I greatly appreciated, given that my back is still bothering me a bit... It always helps to have books in Russian. Today I had six, and they all sold. Spasibo, folks, and thanks to the others who bought books in plain ol' English. The highlight of the session was meeting Gregory, who was dressed in a medical assistant's garb. He said he's written about 27 books and asked how he might self-publish them, and I told him about Create Space. He bought a book on UFO's and claimed he'd seen while vacationing -- where else? -- in New Mexico. He also claimed to have been part of a 72,000 secret military force, all advisors, sent to fight in Laos by President Nixon. He claims 70,000 of that force died. I googled it. The U.S. did fight there, chiefly against the North Vietnamese, but there are no specific figures on casualties. The total figure for the war in Southeast Asia remains 58,000+. I doubt the press wouldn't have gotten wind of so many more Yanks dying there. They would have gleefully reported it.
My thanks to Izzy, who I ran into in the lobby this morning, and who brought me to his beautiful apartment to pick up a bunch of Russian books and VHS tapes.
