The Writer's Life 5/4 - Four & Five

Author Bill Brown visited the floating book shop on Sunday and congratulated me on Rising Star, which he has finished reading. Here's the review he posted, using a pseudonym, at Amazon, where he rated the novel four stars:
"Written over the period of 30 years -- during and ever since the 1980s, in which it is set -- this new, self-published novel follows the career of a fictitious "heavy metal" band from Brooklyn, NY. Knowledgeable about the music business and peppered with references to the musicians of the era, it is more about the particular people involved, NOT stock characters or thinly veiled portraits of well-known people, but very real (though fictitious) people, almost all of whom are the creations of the author's fertile imagination. Absorbing and entertaining, despite the great length. The author has a great eye for detail and a true and rare gift for rendering accents, speech patterns and dialogue. This novel would make a great movie or TV series. My only reservation is that the author is too conservative as a narrator and doesn't take any of the risks or engage in any of the experiments undertaken by post-WWII modernist novelists (circular or disrupted time lines, multiple or unreliable narrators, etc.)."
Bill was beaten to the punch by Little John, whose review is only one line: "Another great read by the Bard of Brooklyn." I believe LJ is an old friend of mine. He rated the book five stars. In terms of sales and buzz, RS has been my biggest disappointment so far. Maybe these two comments will heighten interest. Thanks, guys.
Here's a link to Bill's non-fiction work, Words and Guitar: A History of Lou Reed's Music: http://www.amazon.com/Words-Guitar-History-Reeds-Music/dp/0615933777/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1430771363&sr=1-1&keywords=bill+brown+lou+reed I rated it four stars.

My thanks to the kind folks who made purchases today, especially Esther, who bought five VHS tapes. Her TV went dark when signals went entirely digital, so she relies on video for entertainment. I try to avoid conversation with her. She is the type who repeats things over and over. "And I get my money back if the tape's no good, right?" "You'll let me know if you have more?" She doesn't stop. She got into a conversation about Princess Diana with Herbie, one of my regulars. OMG!
