The Writer's Life 5/3 - Joy

The 2015 NFL draft is in the books and NY Jets fans must be ecstatic. USA Today ranks their haul at #1. The perceived best player, USC DT Leonard Williams, dropped into their lap, the sixth pick. They addressed a need at WR in the second round, taking speedy Devin Smith of Ohio St.. But the pick that has fans dreaming came in the fourth round -- strong-armed QB Bryce Petty of Baylor. Recall that future Hall of Famer Tom Brady wasn’t taken until the sixth round. And the Jets added to the party by trading a seventh round pick for veteran RB Zac Stacy, formerly of the Rams. There is joy in Jetsville! As for the Giants, their picks are at best solid, and totally unexciting. The honor of being the last player taken, dubbed Mr. Irrelevant by the press, goes to TE Gerald Christian of Louisville. Show ’em, young man. The most interesting development will be seeing how the #1 overall pick, young fool Jameis Winston, selected by Tampa Bay, fares at the highest level.

Sign of the times: Political correctness continues to run amok. For the first time in its history the FDNY is allowing a candidate, a 33-year-old woman who failed its physical fitness test, to join the department. Now citizens must hope that the test has never been a solid indicator of job competence.

Yesterday I received about ten follows at Twitter. Since there seems nothing to lose, I return the favor for almost everyone, although I doubt it will do anything to increase my book sales. Most
tweeters are likely in the same boat, thirsting for recognition. The ones I refused yesterday were selling packages of thousands of guaranteed followers. Even shameless promotion should have limits.

Several of my Facebook friends have posted this comment recently: “If you haven’t grown up by age 50, you don’t have to.” I saw negative evidence of that during my morning walk. It was about 6:30 AM and this middle age joker was blasting the stereo in his shiny new black Mercedes convertible. “Look at me everybody.” Pathetic. Fortunately, it was a pop song and not metal or hip hop.

I just saw video of a great selfie at Yahoo Sports -- a guy catching a homer run at Dodgers Stadium. Unfortunately, it didn't have a direct link. Look it up.

My thanks to the kind folks who made purchases and donations on Bay Parkway today. I received about 40 books from three sources and all but four are marketable. Three are large texts on passe versions of Adobe wares. I left them in the lobby of my building. The other was a gem but falling apart: Sidney Sheldon's If Tomorrow Comes. I left it at the entrance of Chase. Special thanks to the ever gregarious Carmine, who gave me a plastic container of blueberries and insisted on paying for John Grisham's The Partner.
