The Writer's Life 5/11 - Speaking of Sports

Recently, a poll of golf pros revealed who they believed was the most overrated player, a tie between Ian Poulter and Ricky Fowler. I assume the respondents were reacting to factors besides skill, as those two guys have done well. Fowler, 26, is one of a handful in golf history who finished in the top five of all four majors in a single season. Yesterday he won the TPC at Sawgrass, which many consider the fifth major. He was six under par the last six holes, pulling himself into a three-man playoff with Sergio Garcia and Kevin Kisner, and prevailing with a fabulous shot to the famed 17th island green and five-foot putt. Way to stick it to ‘em, young man. His mom, sister and girlfriend had left early, believing he had no shot. A friend’s text about the spectacular run had them circle back in time for the coronation. He got a hug from mom and went into a lengthy lip lock with his girl that had the fans howling. Oh - and he earned a cool 1.8 million.

My buddy Bags pointed out an amazing stat in MLB. Bartolo Colon, 42, of the NY Mets has pitched 46.1 innings in 2015 and walked only one batter! He is 6-1, now 210-142 during his career, which began in 1997. I’ve always suspected he was using PEDs. Since he has never been busted, accolades must be bestowed. Arriba!

On the NBA front, there was an interesting development at the end of the Cavaliers-Bulls game. With the score tied, Cavs rookie coach David Blatt drew up a play that was to have Lebron James feed the in-bounds pass to a teammate. The superstar objected, demanded the ball and, as the greats often do, came through, sinking the shot as time expired. Earlier, Blatt was restrained by an assistant from calling a time-out, as the team had none left. Had it been granted, the Cavs would have been assessed a technical foul, which may have cost them a game had the free throws been made. Having coached myself, I almost always side with a coach. It seems as if Blatt, like Pete Carroll in the Super Bowl, was over-coaching instead of allowing his talent to decide the outcome. Maybe the pressure had gotten to him.

Since I had to accompany a friend to the doctor at 12:30, I sped through my morning routine and set up the floating book shop at 10 AM. My thanks to the kind folks who made it work.
