Selling My Books on the Streets of Brooklyn 9/8 - Unpredictable

Yesterday an ex-teammate and his wife, both Lafayette H.S. class of ‘67, returned from a vacation in Turkey. John bemoaned the long wait for security clearance. Two passengers were removed from the plane ahead of all the others. John was in my dream last night. I know what triggered it. My niece is flying in from Denver on 9/11, and I don’t like it. I mentioned it on John’s post, and another alum, Jane, said security would be heightened that day. It provided a few minutes of comfort, then I recalled ISIS, which was not a factor until this year. Who knows if any of our home grown idiots who joined the loony movement have come back with bad intent?

And on to the trivial: Given the results of Sunday’s action, it looks like the NFL will continue to be highly unpredictable. The Bills, Vikings, Titans, Bengals and Panthers had impressive road wins, and last year’s doormats, the Texans and Falcons, won at home. The most pleasant surprise was the Patriots’ loss at Miami. It’s not nearly as satisfying as a Yankees’ loss, but it’s nice, although I expect them to rebound immediately and win the division easily, as always. I expect the Yankees to make a miracle run at the playoffs, despite their mediocrity, which is due in great part to injuries. It’s amazing how their offense just disappears at times. Meanwhile, the Jets won ugly, but it certainly beats the alternative.

Things worked out well for the floating book shop's usual Monday sojourn to Park Slope, although I had to work a little hard hauling the crates up the gradient on 9th Street to just below 7th Avenue. It was mostly cloudy, which eliminated the problem of standing in the sun for too long. I sold only five books, but three of them were weighty, which made the downhill lug back to the car fairly easy. And, when I returned to the neighborhood, a favorable parking spot was waiting for me, which will make the next three sessions easy physically. My thanks to the kind folks who bought, and to Pedro, one of our building's stellar porters, who set aside a huge cache of Russian books, of which I'd run out. Gracias, amigo. Other than somehow tweaking my thigh, it was another good day.
