Selling My Books on the Streets of Brooklyn 9/2 - Happy Returns

After a poor night's sleep, and facing triple h weather, I really had to drag my butt out the door at eleven AM. I don't know if it was the heat or the lack of sales on Monday, but I was up at three AM and, for the first time this year, turned on the fan. This summer we've had very few days in a row of both heat and humidity. In bed I dwelled on past defeats significant only to me -- for instance, making the last out in a softball game. Fortunately, TV has always been a solution for such nonsense. I managed to doze through three sets of old TV shows on AntennaTV, channel 114 on Cablevision in NYC.

Once I'd set up the floating book shop, I was in a better frame of mind. A Russian nanny, wearing a boot after foot surgery, dropped off a couple of books in her native tongue. I'd assumed the mom of the child for whom she cares is a teacher, hence her absence this summer. Gene stopped by and told me how much he, his wife and adult daughter enjoyed the Red Rock territory of Arizona. Each morning they sat facing the mountains at breakfast. They visited the Grand Canyon, but wisely did not make the hike down to the bottom, which I did at 24. The climb back up is a killer, and one has to beware of donkey poo. When Natalya and Benedict got off the bus I gave them a round of applause. They have returned from their summer in Saratoga at the house of one of their children. They later dropped off five "dee-teck-teeve," as Natalya so charmingly puts it, novels in Russian. And my spirits always rise when I see Kinesha, aka Mrs. Eclectic, and her daughter approach. They hadn't been by in a month, so I knew they were ready to stock up. And Marie dropped off a handsome cookbook titled Picnic, which we'd both assumed is in English. It is in French. A while later a gentleman bought it for his French teacher, a remarkable woman who speaks and writes Chinese fluently. I'm always impressed by anyone who can master what is so foreign to romance languages.

Thanks for reminding me how lucky I am, folks.
