Selling My Books on the Streets of Brooklyn 9/7 - Potpourri

Has Jack the Ripper’s identity been finally solved? In an article in today’s NY Post, a DNA expert claims to have id’d the most famous serial killer of all-time. The evidence was extracted from a shawl owned by a Ripper buff, and compared to heirs of the people in question. The professor who performed the test claims the blood matches victim Catherine Eddowes and Polish hairdresser Aaron Kosminski, one of at least 100 known suspects. There’s a joke somewhere in there, but I’m not searching for it.

In another Post article, it is believed there are dozens of pirate radio stations operating in the city. Complaints have been made about Caribbean, Hebrew and shock jock content. The state is home to 25% of the nation’s illegal transmissions, some of which even attract advertisers. I’ve always been fascinated by such ingenuity, although I realize that some of the stuff isn’t worthy of broadcast, and that the piracy might disrupt the signal of legitimate stations.

Take heart golf hackers -- the world’s number one player, Rory McIlroy, four-putted from five feet yesterday. This brings to mind a rationale I frequently used while playing: “If it happens to the best, it will happen to the rest.” I was unable to track down the source of the quote. I doubt I came up with it myself, although I’d love to take credit for it. It was probably a network commentator, perhaps Gary McCord or David Feherty.

This week’s Parade magazine focuses on America’s eating habits. It mentions something I’d never heard before: "The Five Second Rule." According to Wiki, it is the belief that food dropped on the ground will not be significantly contaminated if picked up within five seconds and, therefore, is still good to eat. Ewww!

Yesterday Georgia Southern defeated Savannah St. 83-9 -- and threw only five passes the entire game! This is remarkable in this pass-first era.

My thanks to Natasha and her husband, who, as usual, bought a bunch of books and overpaid for them. My thanks also to the other two women who made purchases, and to the old gentleman who donated four paperbacks.
