The Writer's Life 12/8 - Flaky

Donald Trump is again catching flack from each side of the aisle, Democrats and Republicans desperate to get him out of the race. This time it was his call to halt Muslims from entering the U.S. until authorities figure out what's going on. Each time he has been attacked his poll numbers have risen. I think they will again.

NFL: I was in the car when the Giants decided to forgo the chip shot field goal attempt and had the pass intercepted on the next play. I wasn’t surprised. It followed the script for the entire season. Kudos to the Jets on a great comeback. I’ve said this before, and it’s why fans of Big Blue should be eternally grateful: How did Eli-Coughlin beat Brady-Belichick twice when it counted most? I suppose it’s because coaching and quarterbacking are often vastly over-rated, at least when it comes to championships… Injuries have brought the Patriots down a few notches. At the moment they do not hold home field advantage throughout the playoff. With five weeks remaining, so much can happen, including more injuries or healing of the injured… The Steelers were the most impressive team of the weekend. Are they back as true contenders? They face a great test at Cincinnati this week… Is Seattle back? Another convincing win will put the NFC on red alert… Kudos to Chip Kelly and the Eagles, who have risen from the dead. I was sure Kelly would be fired. The team now has a shot at the playoffs in the very weak NFC East, which may be won by a team with an 8-8 record. Would you believe 7-9, as Maxwell Smart would say?… I’m also surprised Jeff Fisher hasn’t been fired. How many more routs will it take? He hasn’t taken a team to the playoffs since 2006... Last night’s game winning field goal by the Cowboys was set up by a 46-yard kickoff return by Lucky Whitehead. Gotta root for a kid with a name like that.

Interesting stat from a brief article in today’s NY Post: in 2014, 797 residents of NYC died of a drug overdose.

I watched the first five minutes of Eva Longoria’s new TV series, Telenovela, a satire on the form so popular with Latinos. It’s too gaudy and over the top for me. I have no idea if it will be a hit. Night time soaps have been successful in the past. Dallas, Dynasty, Knots Landing and Desperate Housewives all had large followings. I didn’t watch any of those, either. Not my cup of tea.

My thanks to the kind folks who bought and donated books today. The chuckle of the session came when Flaky, a Russian immigrant in his mid 30's, came jogging along, as he does daily from his job to the train, and touted the Carolina Panthers, who are undefeated. He'd recently been heralding the Patriots, who have lost two straight. "You're a jinx," I said, and he had the grace to laugh.
