The Writer's Life 12/11 - Short Stuff

A blurb in the NY Post states that internet activity is now 6% of the U.S. economy. Where would America be without the web? Likely even deeper in the fiscal doldrums.

Recently, Browns notorious party animal QB Johnny Manziel was suspended for overindulging during the team’s bye week. This Sunday he will start vs. the 49ers. In his droll football picks column, Hondo cited a recent article that lauds champagne as good for the heart, and states that Johnny Goofball was merely “pursuing self-improvement.”

The Chicago Cubs seem to be building a monster team, adding valuable free agents to their impressive young nucleus. The Curse of Billy the Goat has been put on notice.

Chipotle has advertised itself as a healthy food alternative. Unfortunately, patrons in several states have been sickened by contaminates. I’ve always been skeptical or the organic craze and wondered if it would lead to more cases like this. There are a number of fruit stands operating on Ocean Parkway outside of Coney Island Hospital. A lot of what I saw did not look clean. It certainly did not gleam as do the fruits and veggies at regular food stands. Maybe that’s because it hasn’t been treated in any way. Still. I'm skeptical of organic, especially given the prices.

Best Wishes to Estelle, 90, who has moved to Florida. I would see her just about every time I set up the floating book shop at my usual nook. She donated dozens of paperbacks. No one would guess her age. I assumed it was 70 until I realized her daughter, Shelley, retired several years ago. For the past year, since an operation to relieve hip pain, Estelle has used a walker. For a while she had a home attendant. Recently, she's been on her own again. She walked to Duncan Donuts on her own every afternoon to socialized with friends. I'll miss her.

My thanks to the kind folks who bought books, and to the Fed-Ex guy, who donated a handful. I had a half-hour conversation with a gregarious Russian immigrant fascinated with language. His English is infinitely better than my Italian. He's been here since '78. When he first emigrated he bought a dictionary of American slang, and his co-workers teased him about his constantly consulting it, I told him how I still tease my sister about the way she pronounces certain words. For instance, when she says "finished," her accent is on the "ed." The thought of it always makes me smile.
