The Writer's Life 11/3 - More Potpourri

NFL: When JPP returns, it will help the Giants a bit, but not as much as they need. He’s not the player he was early in his career, and the team needs a lot more than just him… The Jets lost to the most improved team in the league, the Raiders, on the road. It’s no time to panic. If they hang tough, they will contend for a wild card spot… Obviously, I’ve under-rated the Broncos, who thrashed the previously undefeated Packers, stymied their vaunted offense. Is their defense good enough to stop Tom Brady? They may have to go 16-0 to have any chance of capturing home field throughout the playoffs…Is Andrew Luck injured or just not an elite QB? His play has fallen off considerably. 13 TD’s vs. 12 INT’s is a horrible ratio in the modern game… Kudos to the Bengals, who won ugly in Pittsburgh. They may not have to play one of those first round games that have so bedeviled them… The Panthers are 7-0, but I’m still skeptical of them.

TV: I was surprised to hear Jennifer Lopez will be appearing in a TV series, Shades of Blue, another police drama, which will debut in January. I don’t expect any groundbreaking developments in story lines, but I’m interested in seeing what the chemistry between JLO and her co-star, Ray Liotta, will be like. What I’m really looking forward to is the six-episode return of The X-Files, also scheduled for January… The strength of the ultra-violent Gotham continues to be its young iconic figures: Robert Lord Taylor as the Penguin, Camren Bicondova as the future Catwoman, Selina Kyle; Cory Michael Smith as the future Riddler, Edward Nygm; and David Mazouz as the future Batma, Bruce Wayne. The programmers at CBS have done a disservice to fans of comic book adaptations, pitting Supergirl, which has garnered raves, directly against Gotham. Fortunately, since only 22 episodes are filmed nowadays, fans of either show will be able to catch the other in reruns… Scorpion remains outlandish silly fun.

There were downbeat stats in a couple of columns in today’s NY Post. The homicide rate in NYC has risen 25%, which will not surprise the Mayor’s critics and those who support Stop and Frisk… Nationally, the life expectancy rate continues to rise except in two age groups. Among whites 55-64 it has held fast and shows signs of declining. Among whites 45-54 the rate has gone down by a half-percent every year since 1998. This does not surprise me, as those of that grouping who hung out at P.S. 101 have suffered an astonishing toll directly attributable to drug abuse that, in several cases, weakened the immune system, leaving it defenseless against fatal disease.

My thanks to Cabbie, who purchased four thrillers today, and to Jeff, one Atlantic Towers stellar porters, who donated another 20 books, mostly non-fiction. I inadvertently cut the session an hour short, forgetting that the digital clock in the window of the liquor store across the street had not been adjusted for daylight savings time. Duh!
