The Writer's Life 11/10 - Bounty

NFL: New England is coming to Jersey this week to play the Giants. I expect the Pats to romp, as I did in the last two Super Bowls appearances, which Big Blue somehow won. I’ll be very happy to be wrong… Rex Ryan and the Bills will be in Jersey Thursday. The big blowhard has named Ik Enemkpail an honorary co-captain. He’s the guy who broke Jets QB Geno Smith’s jaw during the pre-season… It seems I’ve seriously over-rated the Packers… When Football Night in America showed the clip of the Rams safety LaMarcus Joyner delivering a cheap shot late hit that knocked out Vikings QB Teddy Bridgewater, analyst Rodney Harrison, a former all-pro with the Patriots, pointed out that the Rams defensive coordinator is Greg Williams, who was suspended for promising players cash bounties for injuries delivered to the opposition when he held the same position in New Orleans. Harrison also said that when his knee was torn up by a low hit vs. Tennessee years ago, while he was writhing in pain on the ground, then Titans head coach, now Rams head coach, Jeff Fisher was laughing at him from the sideline. In fairness, Harrison was often accused of dirty play.

The NYC police union is complaining about the proposed one-percent raise, which is certainly paltry, but members are eligible to retire after just 20 years on the job and receive their pension immediately, a very generous one. Cops are treated unfairly in certain quarters of the city, but they are well compensated.

My thanks to Perry Terrell, who published my short story, Mysteries, in her little zine, The Enchanted File Cabinet, an off-shoot of her Conceit Magazine. It’s the type of boost any writer needs, especially one at the bottom of the literary world. I have added the publication and publisher to the Acknowledgments page of the short works collection I plan to put out some time after New Year’s.

The floating book shop was rained out today.
