The Writer's Life 11/2 - Kudos

Kudos to the NY Mets on a fine season, despite the World Series disappointment. Only diehards would have predicted the team would advance so far. Now management must figure out how to improve the team. Daniel Murphy is a free agent. Do they sign this good hitter despite his lackluster fielding? Do they sign Yoenis Cespedes, whose talent far exceeds his apparent lack of character? Which of their stud pitchers do they trade to acquire a good hitter? It will be an interesting off-season. And will the Royals players begin leaving for larger markets and bigger contracts? It took them so long to get to the top, but it will take much, much less time to sink back to the bottom -- unless they get really lucky with their draft picks. Even the championship dollars won't be enough for them to sign several big name free agents.

RIP Fred Dalton Thompson, 73, who succumbed to cancer. He served as senator from Tennessee from 1994-2003, His views were conservative. He began acting late in life and has 53 credits listed at IMDb. I will always remember him as DA Arthur Branch on Law & Order.  He played the part in 116 episodes of the original series, and 25 of the off-shoots. Although NYC has not had a conservative in that position in a long time, it made for great dramatic conflict on the show. Here's a wonderful quote attributed to him:  "After two years in Washington, I often long for the realism and sincerity of Hollywood." Well done, sir.

Kudos to these celebrities, who ran in the NYC Marathon to raise money for charity: Alicia Keys, Ethan Hawke, Tiki Barber and James Blake. Other famous participants were: Sean Coombs, Katie Holmes, Al Roker, Ryan Reynolds, Edward Norton, Lance Armstrong, Pamela Anderson and Alanis Morisette. Retired tennis pro Blake had the best time among those mentioned, 3:51:19. Keys was on the course almost six hours, which proves her heart is as big as her talent. It is exhausting. In my lone entry it took me 5:21 to finish, and during the second half I alternated between walking one block, jogging one block.

My thanks to the young woman who purchased two romance novels and the gentleman who bought The Big Book of Jewish Humor.
