The Writer's Life 6/8 - Croke

I hadn’t had a vivid dream in a while. This morning’s was a doozy. I was somehow swept up in a band headed for a recording session. I must have had a rare night of competence that fooled the other members into believing my presence was a plus. My musicianship is atrocious, my singing laughable. And my old Yamaha acoustic guitar is not in top condition. I let it sit around unplayed for long stretches. The neck is probably a bit warped, which causes a slight ringing in the high E and B strings, which can't be discerned, at least not by my tone deafness, when a chord is struck. And the G constantly slips out of tune. Given all this, I felt I didn’t belong in the group and wanted to recommend a couple of friends to replace me. A female exec glanced at a paper and told me to look at a saxophone, since it was my weakness, which seemed strange, as I don’t know the first thing about playing one. The other members also received harsh criticism. I sense it was preparation for the thick skin the music business, the arts, demand. Since dreams are coded, I take this as fear that my writing is just as incompetent as my musicianship. As far as the wish fulfillment Freud believes is behind all dreams, I assume it is the hope of never being deemed a hack, or perhaps the hope the public never discovers the fraud I fear I am as an author.

I was rooting around Yahoo News, trying to find interesting items to add to the blog. Here are three:
Boston police busted a guy for trying to piggyback behind a friend through a subway turnstile. When he was searched at the station, he was carrying $7000. It must have been all hundred dollar bills.
In Vegas, the Little Darlings strip club is recruiting, posting signs that read: "Now auditioning Class of 2015" and "Pay your way through college." Man, it's a different world than the one I grew up in.
In Seattle, authorities were dismayed at the crime rate in a park in its Chinatown section, and hoped free ping pong would curb it. When statistics dropped, they added more tables. I guess it's their version of Midnight Basketball.

This morning I received an email informing me that Crokes is following me on Twitter. It appears to be a rival to Facebook. Not one to turn down free publicity, I joined and posted a link to my Amazon page.

The floating book shop had great luck with the weather, the rain holding off, but not so much with sales. My thanks to the three kind ladies who bought books on Bay Parkway. This morning there were hundreds of DVDs piled outside the trash room on our floor. I took half of them. I looked through one bag and discovered they were all in Russian. I brought out 20 or so today, certain at least a few would sell. Not one did.
