The Writer's Life 6/10 - Knowledge

RIP Vincent Musetto, 74, incomparable headline writer for the New York Post, who came up with the classic everyone remembers: Headless Body in Topless Bar. Well done, goombah.

Where does it end? NYC Councilwoman Julissa Ferraras is sponsoring a bill that would make tampons free to teenagers.

A new iphone app will allow users to track their sexcapades. I bet divorce lawyers are thrilled. Expect interesting dirt to become public once the thing is up and running, and complaints from those whose phones are hacked.

It kills me to say this, but right now the Yankees look like the best team in baseball. Meanwhile the Mets were no-hit by 27-year-old Giants rookie Chris Heston. Order has been restored. Phooey.

I watched Catch-22 (1970) last night on the Movies! Channel, 113 on Cablevision. Although the film pales in comparison to Joseph Heller’s landmark satire on the madness of war, credit must be given to director Mike Nichols and screenwriter Buck Henry, who dared to tackle it. It’s been at least 40 years since I read the book, so take this with a grain of salt, but I think the movie fails because it is so much more grim than the madcap novel. I remember seeing it for a second time with my friend Vinnie and his dad, a WWII vet, who summed it up succinctly, dismissively: “War is bad.” Apparently, he believed the film offered little more than the obvious, which to this day seems very astute.

My thanks to the gentleman who bought six volumes of The New Book of Knowledge and a book on family health. That took a lot of weight off my hands, as did Herbie's purchase of a hardcover Thesaurus, which made almost enough room for the 30 or so books a Russian mom and daughter donated, and ten in English by Marie. The only drawback to the session was the continued lack of interest in the Russian DVDs I have, which I may give away. Among the 100 or so that I found outside the trash room on our floor, about 30 were obvious copies. I left a bag full on the garden ledge yesterday and they were gone by morning. I put out another bag before I left today. I asked Steve, the poet laureate of Sheepshead Bay, if the ones that seem store-bought were also copies. He looked at two and determined they were. I know people sell such stuff all the time without facing consequences, but I don't want to do anything that puts the floating book shop in jeopardy. I'm so lucky no one, at least to my knowledge, complains about it.
