The Writer's Life 6/5 - Switches

Is there a more left wing branch of government than the Environmental Protection Agency? The EPA has released this statement: “Based on available scientific information, we found out that hydraulic fracturing activities in United States are carried out in a way that has not had widespread systemic impact on drinking-water resources.” I guess opponents will focus on the words "available" and "widespread" to counterattack. It will be interesting to hear what NY Governor Cuomo has to say. While NYC is booming, the rest of the state is hurting, and rich deposits of natural gas are waiting to be extracted. There is an economic boom just across the border in Pennsylvania. Cue the chorus -- Frack, baby, frack.

For only the second time since 1894, MLB will have a switch-pitcher. The A's have called up the ambidextrous Pat Venditte, who has been stellar at Triple A. He has three pitches in his repertoire from either side: fastball, change-up, slider. His right arm is stronger, delivering his heater five mph more than his left. He does not break 90 on the radar gun. His strength is his sidearm delivery. He wears a special six-finger glove he slips on either hand. He warms up each arm before making an appearance. The last time a switch-pitcher appeared in a big league game was 1995, when Greg A. Harris pitched one inning for the Expos that season.

Talented St. John's PG Rysheed Jordan, academically ineligible, is leaving school to pursue a pro career, either overseas or in the developmental league. He averaged 14 pts. and three assists per game last season. He didn't belong in college in the first place. I'm hoping more kids take this route from the start in the future. It makes more sense, especially when a true student-athlete might have a chance at a scholarship.

I had to improvise today, as my usual book nook was being renovated, the porters planting shrubbery along the garden that spans the apartment building at the corner of East 13th and Avenue Z. I set up shop curbside between the mailbox and the bus stop. The first hour was dominated by  jack-hammering from across the street, as the crew re-wiring the street lights continues its work. Its about the fourth time they've dug up the same spot. My thanks to the two kind ladies who made purchases.
