Selling My Books on the Streets of Brooklyn 7/9 - Choices

Hillary received a 14 million dollar advance for her latest book, Hard Choices, which covers her tenure as Secretary of State. It is not selling well. As of now, it looks like the publisher, Simon and Schuster, will not recoup its investment. Her other books have all made money. It must be particularly grating to the Clintons that the book has been knocked from the top of the non-fiction list by Blood Feud, Edward Klein’s expose` of the animosity between the Clintons and the Obamas. Is the public suffering Clinton fatigue? Have her recent gaffes hurt her standing? I’d thought she was a lock for the Presidency. I now have doubts. She is clueless as a campaigner. This means nothing to her supporters, but it may cause a significant number among the crucial undecided to think twice about voting for her.

There is a great caption on the front page of today’s New York Post regarding yesterday’s blowout in World Cup soccer, as Germany routed the home team, Brazil, 7-1: Das Boot, a take-off on the great 1981 WWII submarine film, directed by Wolfgang Petersen, rated 8.5 of ten by 131,000+ contributors at IMDb. If you’ve never seen it, I guarantee it’s a lot more entertaining than a soccer match. A friend, a huge movie buff, Jewish, won’t watch it because he fears it makes the Germans sympathetic. I see his point, but the viewer need not root for them. One may simply enjoy the technical brilliance and edge of the seat tension. It is one of the best film’s of all-time, and most people would find the ending satisfying. The dubbed version is fine.

I've always believed government should err on the side of freedom, gun ownership being the most obvious manifestation of the issue, but the idea of private citizens owning drones seems like a disaster waiting to happen.

The floating book shop got off to a flying start today with two quick sales. Alas, they were the only ones of the session. My thanks to the buyers, and to the gentleman who donated a box of paperbacks in pristine condition.
