Selling My Books on the Streets of Brooklyn 6/2 - Around the Dial

I have mixed feelings about the release of Bowe Bergdahl. I’m happy for him and his family, but I worry that the five creeps let go from Gitmo will eventually kill innocents, possibly Americans. And the trade may encourage our enemies into more kidnapping, hoping to swap victims for other terrorists. Israel has done this several times. I have no idea how it has turned out for them in terms of casualties, although the country seems to have significantly stemmed the attacks it suffered for so long. Time will tell.

The Andy Warhol comment about 15 minutes of fame is known to most. Someone please tell Donald Sterling’s mistress her time is up. Unfortunately, much of the media is as bad as she is, giving her the publicity she obviously craves.

RIP Ann B. Davis, 88, who succumbed to injuries suffered in a fall at her home. Most TV fans remember her as Alice Nelson, the maid on The Brady Bunch. She appeared in all 117 episodes of that beloved series. Believe it or not, I have not seen more than 15 minutes in total of it. I remember Davis more for her role as the wise-cracking secretary, Schultzy, on The Bob Cummings Show, also known as Love That Bob, which ran from 1955-'59. She logged 154 episodes of that and received two Emmys for her work. Well done, madam.

I had no luck finding parking in Park Slope, so I returned to my usual nook and sold a lot of books and received even more in donations. A gentleman brought a huge Random House Dictionary, which must weigh five pounds. I don't know why anyone would want something so humongous when one half the size works just as well, and definitions are just a click away on electronic devices, but one never knows. Another man gave me ten pre-revolution works in Russian, none by famous authors. One of my regulars shook her head and said: "No good."
