The Writer's Life 9/2 - Girls & Boys

There is big news on the literary front. Fans of the late Stieg Larsson’s Millenium trilogy have a new book to read. Knopf commissioned David Lagercrantz to continue to follow the extraordinary Lisbeth Salander and other characters from the series in The Girl in the Spider‘s Web. Released only yesterday, 230 people have already rated the novel at Amazon, forging to a consensus of 3.5 of five. They must have bought the Kindle version, which sells, outrageously, for $14. In a review in the NY Post, Sara Stewart finds it lacking and wonders if the author were under orders to create a PG-13 story to broaden its appeal, as if it lacks a fan base. She sees the publication as strictly a money grab and believes the series should be laid to rest. If sales are brisk, there will be another chapter. Money talks.

A county clerk in Kentucky has raised a ruckus by refusing to issue marriage licenses to same sex couples, saying it violates her religious beliefs. Since she’s an elected official, she cannot be fired, only impeached. While I admire her stand, she should resign. I don’t like the courts’ decision anymore than she does, but it’s the law. Her best defense would be to cite the many public officials who ignore laws with which they don’t agree, the President included. I'd be surprised if the court of public opinion backed her.

If the forecast is correct. the heat wave will last only one more day. Conditions would have been a snap today if I hadn't left the bottle of water in my freezer. Fortunately, there was enough of a breeze to make standing in the shade more than tolerable. Business wasn't a good as yesterday, but I got a late break that made it better than average. Al, a local mensch, came by just before I was going to pack up. He had the Daily News with him. Today's cover features former pro wrestler Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka, who has been charged in the 1983 death of his girlfriend. This kicked off a discussion about the Sport of Kings that was fun and sad, given the premature deaths of so many of its stars. Since the conversation kept the floating book shop open longer than I'd intended, I was there when Lev showed up. He bought five books in Russian. My thanks, and also to the wheelchair bound gentleman who bought a beautiful pictorial on vintage automobiles, and the woman who purchased a book on dogs.
