The Writer's Life 8/4 - Moves

The precedent has been set. A judge has busted the Kentucky public official who refused to grant marriage licenses to gays on the grounds that it conflicted with her religious convictions. From this day forward, let all public officials who refuse to carry out a law be incarcerated. Of course, this may require the building of more prisons, but so what? Let's start at the top and work down. Politicians where they belong -- in jail -- let the fun begin!

So the NFL is not allowed to police itself?

I chatted with two of my favorites today. Mira usually passes pushing a stroller. Today she was flying solo, returning from classes at St. Joseph's College, where she has just begun, majoring in English, in the hope of becoming a teacher. She was just short of a degree in Child Studies when she left the Ukraine at 21. Now 29, she is starting over and a little intimidated. I assured her she would do fine. She is one of those people blessed with a positive aura.
Laura, a Romanian immigrant who could pass for 20 despite the fact she has a high school age son, was focused on her cell phone as she approached. I cleared my throat a couple of times to snare her attention, and she gave me a big hug and kiss. She is disappointed in not having qualified for med school and is settling on a career in Physical Therapy. She has managed to get her younger son into a charter school, but is a little worried, having heard pros and cons about it. She is such a sweetheart.

The floating book shop continued its recent peculiar pattern, a significant drop in temperature resulting in fewer sales. For some bizarre reason, business has been much better when the temperature has been in the 90's. My thanks to Mira, who bought volumes two and three of essays by Montaigne published by the Oxford Press. Written in the 1500's, they were translated into Old English by John Florio. Unfortunately, neither book has a publication date. Perhaps volume one, which was not among the donation I received, did. I suppose I should have looked the books up to see if they have any value. I hope they do. With a child to rear and college to fund, Mira could use the money more than I. My thanks also to Alan, who bought Janet Evanovich's Four to Score from her Stephanie Plum series, of which there are at least 22 installments. He's moving to Florida after Thanksgiving and said he'll miss me. I'll certainly miss his patronage. There were several sessions where he was the only buyer of the day.
