The Writer's Life 4/6 - 800+

I drove my sister, eldest and third eldest nieces to the house of my youngest, in Jersey. It was a nice though odd day. We arrived just before my great niece/godchild Danielle was leaving for her one-nine shift at McDonald’s. She looked great in her royal blue work shirt. Her brother Ronnie is completing his freshman year at the University of Kentucky. He was disappointed by the basketball team’s loss in the semi-finals, but did not participate in the post-game vandalism on campus. He simply observed. Couches and T-shirts were burned. He didn’t mention any cars being overturned, although newspaper accounts claimed it happened, which is not cool. Anyway, dinner was not the same without them, but it did not prevent me from stuffing my face and taking home leftovers. Traffic was smooth going, annoying coming home. These days I hate driving at night and try to avoid it. It's gotten so hard to see.

The baseball season has started. A lot will have to go right for the Mets to contend. They should tell themselves: “If the Royals can do it, why not us?” If the Yankees stay healthy, they will do very well. If they stay only reasonably healthy, they should still contend for a playoff spot. As for a prediction -- in the era of the wild card, throw the names of all the teams, except the Braves, who are having a fire sale, into a hat, shake, and pick a winner.

I caught the second season debut of AD, which ran at nine last night on NBC. Its focus was the crucifixion and its immediate aftermath. Although well done, it did not bring anything new to the table. Still, I’m always intrigued by how it is handled. How many times has the greatest story ever told been done? Jesus of Nazareth (1977) remains the best version by far.

It was the nicest weather day of the year for the floating book shop. My thanks to the people who bought and donated books, especially Denise, who purchased Killing. It is the 800th copy sold of my books. My goal is 1000, but I wouldn't stop there -- should I attain it. The total is actually higher, as it does not include the 20 or so print and Kindle copies of Exchanges that have sold at Amazon, which provides tracking graphs to authors. It looks like I will never be paid for them. The publisher, WheelMan Press, is probably just scraping by, if he is still at it. I haven't checked his website in a while. I'm not going to harass him. I appreciate his having taken a shot.
