The Writer's Life 3/10 - Young Men

I’ve been preparing a file of Close to the Edge to upload to Kindle once the contract with AuthorHouse expires. I’m appalled at the number of spelling errors I’ve found. “Argument” and “Embarrassed” are always incorrect, the former carrying an e after the u, the latter lacking an r. There are too many others as well, almost always dealing with the lack of or inclusion of unwarranted double letters. At least the next incarnation will be infinitely cleaner. I’ve also been eliminating a lot of “However,” which I was overly fond of way back when. I’ve made one small addition. I regretted that the major character was almost entirely downbeat. I adapted something from real life to show Vinnie is capable of occasional levity. There was an old-timer who from his second floor porch used to call out: “Ay, bella roba,” each time I passed. I don’t recall how it started but I imagine he’d seen me in my communion suit. It always brought a smile to my face. I'm using the latest version of Word, which is pretty amazing. When I open the file it asks if I want to pick up where I’d left off. This morning there was a troubling message, something like: “Someone made changes to this file after you close it.” I fear it is whomever has infected my PC with bugs. What are these changes -- puerile vandalism? Ad links? A virus? I’ll comb through the file before I finalize it, hoping to spot anything that doesn’t belong.

I dreamed I was an aide to Benjamin Netanyahu, struggling to keep up with the pace he set, lagging 25 feet behind, telling myself: “You’re too old for this.”

Since I would never vote for a Democrat, I understand perfectly those who would never vote for a Republican, but please -- I beg you, my liberal friends -- don’t tell me the Clintons are good. Just hold your nose and vote for the standard bearers of the ideals of the party. Billary manifest all that is wrong with politics. Anyone who doesn't see this is delusional.

The floating book shop got off to a flying start, came to a complete standstill for two hours, then rallied in the last. A tall, thin young man overpaid for Arnold Schwarzenegger's Encyclopedia of Body Building, a huge tome. Then it was all donations for a while, from Cabbie, Ol' Smokey, Madeline and Natalya and Benedict, about 40 books in all. I stayed a little longer because it was too much to haul back to the car. Fortunately, a serious young man came along and selected Theodore Dreiser's autbio of his youth, Dawn, Pete Hamill's Forever, and Dominick Dunne's Another City, Not my Own, each rather large. Then another young man bought two self help books. Finally, Alan purchased the Jonathan Kellerman thriller, Therapy. Thanks, guys.
