Selling My Books on the Streets of Brooklyn 9/2 - Darlings

I've finished editing Oana's 40-page portrait of life under communism in Romania. It was rough in spots. I hope I improved it. I feel privileged to have worked on it. We in the West, where freedom has been a given, need to be reminded not only how lucky we are but that we must be on guard against monsters who would take it away.

Yesterday Neil visited the floating book shop on Bay Parkway. Today he sent me an email with instructions on how to do a TV show on Public Access. He has one himself, Della Peppo Village, a blend of music and sketches that airs every Friday night at 8:30. He once interviewed me on the street and used it on the program. I'm passing the info to my buddy Bags, who has filmed a lot of his band through the years, and also did a Mafia serial with friends, as well as a video profile of a real character who sells books on the street in Greenwich Village. No, not me. His name was Arnie. There is no fee involved. All costs are on the production side.

It was a quiet day for the floating book shop. There were a lot fewer people than usual out and about. Natalia and Benedict have returned from their summer in Saratoga, where their daughter lives. Natalia greeted me with a kiss and called me "Dahling." Al just returned from visiting relatives on the west coast. In Seattle he attended a charity auction hosted by Charles Barkley, who Al described as a riot. Sir Charles is suffering from a bad back, so he was unable to auction off a round of golf with himself, but he promised to replace divots, rake sand traps, and secure refreshments for whoever won his services. Al auctioned off an hour discussion on his expertise on Brooklyn sports. He spent some time in L.A. as well, where one of his sons edits TV shows such as Dexter and The Walking Dead. He was introduced to Rita Moreno and told her he'd seen her on Broadway in the King and I in the 50's - and she said she wanted to forget how long ago that was.

My thanks to the young man who purchased Joyce Meyer's Battlefield of the Mind: Winning the Battle in Your Mind, and to Al, who bought one of the oldies CD's I burned on this computer. Man, it was sticky out there today.
