Selling My Books on the Streets of Brooklyn 7/8 - Candidates

Eliot Spitzer, who resigned the governorship of NY in disgrace when he was found to have patronized hookers, has re-entered politics. He is running for NYC comptroller, the office that oversees the city's finances. This is as juicy a tidbit to have come along in horn-dog's age. One of his opponents, running on the libertarian line, is Kristin Davis, a madam who arranged trysts for the infamous Client 9, Spitzer's secret identity in the bizarro world of prostitution, which is just one synonym for politics. Davis is eminently qualified, having been VP of a two billion hedge fund before operating the business that brought the governor down. In fact, she blacklisted Spitzer for violent behavior toward the women in her employ. She served four months at Rikers Island. Spitzer did no prison time. Please let these two square off in a debate. Just think - when Hillary's eight years in the White House are reaching an end, a dream ticket for the presidency may appear: Spitzer-Weiner. Where else can such megalomaniacs dwell than in the world of politics? Sad thing is, many would vote for them, not only versus Republicans but in primaries versus those who share similar philosophy.

And in another delicious morsel, poetic justice, really, Jimmy LaSalvia, co-founder of GOProud, strategist for gay conservatives, has called on Capitol One to fire Alec Baldwin, the bank's chief spokesman in media ads. He reasons that if Paula Deen, stripped of several of her gigs for a racial slur uttered 30 years ago, has been called to account, why hasn't Baldwin for his recent homophobic threats on Twitter? That's answered easily: the outrage of leftists and the media is selective. For instance, Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia was an icon, despite racist views; Senator Strom Thurmond of South Carolina was simply a bigot. Since they believe they are on the side of the angels, the sins of liberals are forgiven, sometimes immediately.

It was a quiet day at the floating book shop, but there was a Kodak moment. Flora, who is in her 80's, lives in the Atlantic Towers complex with her son, Alan. Each has purchased books from me. Today Flora approached and asked: "Would you like to go out with me?" I lied in response: "Thanks, but I have a girlfriend." Geez, am I looking so old these days? Now I will be uncomfortable each times she passes.

My thanks to the Fed Ex guy who donated three books, and to the gentleman who bought John Le Carre's Our Kind of Traitor, donated yesterday by a woman I neglected to thank.
