Selling My Books on the Streets of Brooklyn 12/6 - Bastions

There’s an interesting op-ed piece by Mike Saltsman in today’s NY Post. He covers innovations fast food joints are making to counter the higher employee costs activists and government are imposing on them. A tech firm in San Francisco, of all places, a liberal bastion, is perfecting an automated burger maker and packager, which would eliminate almost all the people putting them together these days. And several restaurants in Europe have gone to touch screen ordering, eliminating the need for cashiers. It’s just another example of how unions and activists kill jobs. They wouldn’t care if a Big Mac sells for ten bucks, or if the subway fare went to five. The unions of pro athletes have thus far been able to find enough well-to-do customers to fill their pockets, despite high ticket prices. Fast food is geared toward people of modest income, who would likely find alternative food sources if innovations don't keep costs in check.

KC Chiefs LB Javon Belcher spent a night partying with a woman, went home to his girlfriend and their infant child, got into an argument, murdered the woman, then killed himself the next day. The usually sensible Bob Costas, on Sunday Night Football, blamed the gun. Perhaps Belcher’s mind was twisted by a blow to the head or pain killers or alcohol or PEDs, as pundits asking for compassion suggest. I have compassion for the dead mother and child, although I believe, in light of the events, the child will be better off without Belcher. I dismiss compassion when the perpetrator crosses the line into violent crime. Given the circumstances, the best thing he could have done was kill himself. At least his final act was the right one.

The world of politics can always be counted on for comedy, often maddening. Michigan Congressman Hansen Clarke has petitioned President Obama to bail-out the city of Detroit, which faces bankruptcy, as do so many bastions of liberalism. He cites the success of the auto bail-out, which cost tax-payers billions they will never recoup. The left has different standards for success than the average household, which must live within its means and has no access to a monetary printing press. The Motor City has been run by Democrats since 1962. It has lost 25% of its population since 2000. That is nothing to laugh about.

The cold limited the floating book shop to two hours today. I thank the two women who bought and the one who donated. The highlight of the session was a long rant by Old Smokey. Between fits of coughing, he related a lot of the violence that has characterized his life. He once kicked his father in the groin. "He was never able to get it up again after that," he said. He also slammed a door in his sister's face, breaking her nose.
