The Writer's Life 12/5 - Positive & Negative

I sold a couple of my books at a steep discount today. Janet and Stu had previously expressed interest in A Hitch in Twilight, so I offered them a copy for two bucks. I've cut them slack on a lot items in the past, but didn't mind because they're regular customers. They first went shopping and were obviously in the midst of an argument upon their return. I don't think either is working. I know what's it's like to be down to counting change, so the thought of taking money from them made me uncomfortable, even though they always seem to have enough for cigarettes. One day Janet asked me about GED books, of which I'd run out, having recently sold five. I hoped they would leave without buying, as the situation had a negative cast. Stu must have just cashed a check. He angrily peeled a five from a substantial roll, and I signed the book and gave it and three dollars change to Janet, lamenting not only that I had lowered the price but that the transaction seemed tainted. The purpose of offering the discount is to get the books read, and I'm not even sure that will be accomplished in this case. Dang if I wasn't feeling guilty about selling one of my own books. Fortunately, Dmitriy approached a few minutes later, two dollars at the ready for a copy of Killing. His positive attitude lifted my spirits. I asked him to spell his name. He dubbed it the Russkie spelling. I'm pretty sure he will at least attempt to read the novel. Those were the only two sales of the day, which was surprising, as there were at least 15 items in Russian on display, books and DVDs. At least I'll have plenty of ammunition for the next session.

I'm in one of those periods where I'm reaching payout thresholds at several survey sites. My thanks to Clear Voice and Valued Opinions, which added to my gift certificate balance at Amazon, and Ipsos, which deposited 15 bucks into my Paypal account, where my goal of reaching half the amount, approximately $1000, it will take to self publish my rock n roll epic, Rising Star, and buy 100 copies, is a distinct possibility.
