The Writer's Life 11/4 - Civics

I was up bright and early and performed my civic duty, a futile task for any voter, doubly for a conservative in New York. I expect the candidates I selected to be trounced. In the one local race that likely will be won by a Republican, for the House seat, I wrote in Rudy Giuliani, as I could not in good conscience vote for Michael Grimm, whose behavior has been deplorable. Do bad people make effective legislators? It has been proven many times, but I choose not to go down that road. I show Grimm the same disdain I do the Clintons and Andrew Cuomo.

Also in a political vein: there is an amusing article on page two of today's NY Post. Unfortunately, I was unable to find it at the paper's website, but I did track down the info at businessinsider.com. Former NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg's lawyers have been busy buying up damaging domain names. Here's a short list:
BloombergBlows.nyc
MikeIsTooShort.nyc
MikeBloombergisaDweeb.nyc
MikeBloombergRocks.nyc (How did this one get in there, and why did they buy it?)

MichaelBloombergisaWeiner.nyc
F---kbloomberg.nyc
BloombergistooRich.nyc
getalifemike.nyc
BloombergisanAss.nyc
There are many more. WOR-AM radio host Mark Simone believes most were created by the Bloomberg team itself simply to foil opponents. He believes Bloomberg was a great mayor. I disagree.

NFL Week Nine: How premature and silly were all those articles that speculated in September about New England's and Tom Brady's demise? Suddenly the Pats seem the team to beat... Have the 49ers tuned out Coach Harbaugh? Did they choose the wrong QB, Kaepernick over Steve Smith, now with the resurgent Chiefs? They lost Sunday's exactly the same way I believe they lost the Super Bowl two years ago -- by not running Frank Gore, a great back, on the goal line... The Seahawks continue to struggle. Fortunately, they will host the Giants next weekend, which gives them an opportunity to build momentum for the home stretch. Big Blue has proven to be a pretender... As for the Jets, let the speculation about the draft and the next coach begin.

Last Friday Luis, one of the porters of the building at the corner of E.13th and Avenue Z, pulled out the remaining hedges from the narrow garden that surrounds the property. Approximately half of them had been killed off by the flood waters of Hurricane Sandy. Today a crew was planting bushes along the E. 13th side, which still left me plenty of room to operate the floating book shop. I also found out what all the work at street corners is about. A foreman told me the flood waters corroded the wiring, which all has to be replaced. It is being done by a private company contracted by the city, a huge gig. The other night, when I ventured to Queens for a wake, I was flabbergasted that a stretch of the Belt Parkway is still without lights -- two years after the storm.
My thanks to the kind folks who bought and donated books, especially Yuri, who purchased Killing. It was the best sales day in a while.
