Selling My Books on the Streets of Brooklyn 5/4 - Comebacks

In 2011 pro golfer J.B. Holmes, now 32, had what he described as “minor” brain surgery to eliminate vertigo. A while later he was air-lifted to another procedure, as he was allergic to the titanium device implanted in his head. Last year he suffered a broken ankle and elbow injury while rollerblading. His worldwide ranking fell to 242nd. Yesterday he won the Wells Fargo Open, edging Jim Furyk by one shot. It was his first victory in six years, third overall. Kudos, sir.

With the Red John arc resolved and rumors of its cancellation rife after six seasons, The Mentalist seems to be moving to a conclusion wherein Patrick Jane and Teresa Lisbon become a couple. It seems forced. I never felt the chemistry between those two was strong. Although I enjoyed the supporting cast, Simon Baker's charm was by far the dominant force on the fun show. Meanwhile, Resurrection continues to be absorbing, but I’m beginning to fear the resolution to the mystery of people returning from the dead will be as lame as that of so many sci-fi works that start strong and end weak. I hope it's not alien invasion or a government experiment gone haywire. Of course, the big news in TV is the return tonight of 24 on Fox. It’ll actually be only 10 episodes, but it is most welcome. Jack Bauer rides again, Chloe in his corner.

I waited a half hour for a parking space to open up on 9th Street just below 7th Avenue in Park Slope. When one finally did an SUV beat me to the spot. I took it as an omen and returned to my usual nook in Sheepshead Bay, denying the desire to key the driver's side of the guy's car. It was the right call. Monsey's donation immediately began paying dividends, as I suspected it would. I sold eight DVDs and two of the Maya Angelou books of non-fiction she gave me. An elderly Russian gentleman purchased a trio of Alexandre Dumas translated into his native tongue. A woman asked for works on crime for her son, who is in prison -- I didn't ask for what. The best I could come up with was three novels. Another woman donated a mixed bag highlighted by large, illustrated, educational tomes for kids. Thanks, folks.
