RIP William Guarnere, 90, WWII veteran whose exploits were dramatized in the TV miniseries Band of Brothers, which was based on a book by Stephen Ambrose and followed the members of Easy Company from training in Georgia in 1942 through the war's end in 1945. Guarnere's heroics earned him the nickname Wild Bill. He lost a leg trying to help a wounded solider. The "Greatest Generation" has lost another premier member.
Congratulations to the Wichita St. basketball team, which swept its three games in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament, finishing the regular season an astonishing 34-0. I don't care what league a team is in -- that is impressive. And they won most games with ease. I'm sure they'll make an early exit in the NCAA tourney now that I've jinxed them. Wouldn't it be something if they went all the way? They would have to be considered one of the greatest teams of all time.
I brought an interesting Russian book to the floating shop today. Its subject matter was obviously sex, given the cover. Thumbing through it, scanning the illustrations, I did not spot anything explicit. Still, I wondered if I should keep it under wraps and show it to the males who demonstrated an interest in the other Russian books I had on display. I don't want to get into trouble by offending anyone. The floating book shop gets by on the good will of the public. The book reminded me of a humor magazine college friends used to purchase, Sex to Sexty, which I spent a lot of time perusing while they were at a football practice. I don't remember if it went further than soft core in its illustrations and text, but it was definitely a lot more risque than all but outright porn. In fact, Dian Hanson has written a book about it: Sex to Sexty: The Most Vulgar Magazine Ever Made! Anyway, a middle aged woman spotted it and giggled. She debated quite a while. I sensed her thoughts: What would people think of me? I was anxious to unload it so I offered it to her for a dollar, although it was in mint condition. I put it in a black plastic bag. Spasibo, madam, and thanks also to the gentleman who purchased a regular book in Russian, and to Bad News Billy, who overpaid for a large pictorial on art, which he intends to give to his sister, an artist. The last time I saw him he and a friend were bent over the engine of his car. Fortunately, it's still running. Unfortunately, his granddaughter, a high school freshman, is still misbehaving.
