Selling My Books on the Streets of Brooklyn 10/2 - Kudos

RIP Tom Clancy, 66, best-selling author of thrillers, who died today after a brief, undisclosed illness. He hit a home run with his first novel, The Hunt for Red October, which was accepted by the first publisher to which it was submitted, and he never looked back. Most of the books feature Jack Ryan as the hero, played so ably by Harrison Ford in film adaptations. Clear and Present Danger was the #1 hardcover of the 80's. Debt of Honor, published in 1994, foresaw the attacks of 9/11. In it, a jet is flown into the capitol building, killing the President and most members of Congress. There are video and board games based on his works. He was a part owner of the Baltimore Orioles. His final novel, Command Authority, is scheduled to be released in December. Of course, there may be discarded or uncompleted works in his archives. It wouldn't be surprising to see more books issued under his name and a co-writer's, which is so common today even for living authors. I'm sure Clancy, who was worth hundreds of millions, had a great health plan. Sometimes even great riches fail to keep death from one's door. Kudos, sir.

The Republican strategy should be: We will vote to fund Obamacare if all exemptions are eliminated. This will be unlikely to happen. The Tea Party conservatives are no more willing to compromise than the President is. And there are RINOs (Republican in Name Only), who will not be willing to give up their Cadillac care. How does one not be cynical about politics?

It was another glorious indian summer day. Business was slow but painless at the floating book shop. I thank the three people who bought four books in total, and the Lady Eve, who, late in the session, donated a large, gorgeous pictorial on dolls that should be an easy sell.
