The political process is too often maddening. Those who relish it must be mental defectives. There is a runoff election for the office of Public Advocate in New York City today. Many would argue that the position is useless except as a stepping stone to higher office. The entire budget of the office is three million dollars. The cost of running the election is 13 million. Sparse turnout is expected. Madness.
I think Republicans are taking a big risk in forcing a showdown over Obamacare. I would support it if they made enactment contingent on one aspect - no exemptions for anyone. Everyone shares the pain. The fact that Congress would exempt themselves from the law is proof that the chief goal of each member is re-election, not doing what is right or good. Those who support the exemptions are scoundrels.
Recently, the owner of Barilla, makers of pasta products, said in an interview that as someone who believed in traditional marriage, he would never produce ads catered to gays. He was excoriated by the acolytes of political correctness, branded a bigot, proving once again that the most intolerant are usually those who demand tolerance. Of course, their aim is not tolerance but approval. I don't give a damn what consenting adults do in the privacy of their bedrooms, but I don't have to like some or any of it. I hope the stand the owner has taken will do for Barilla what it did for Chick-Fil-A restaurants - create a boom. I've been buying Stop n Shop brand pasta to save money. I will be buying Barilla from now on.
The weather has been so good for weeks. I usually cash in the recyclables on a rainy day. It hasn't rained during the afternoon in a long time. The empties are piling up in a corner of my kitchen. It is perfect book-selling weather. Unfortunately, business has been a bit slow. My thanks to the six people who bought books today.
