The Writer's Life 4/5 - Odysseys

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the release of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Although I like the film, whose stature has grown through the decades, I believe certain sequences go on way too long, robbing it of greatness. In today's NY Post, Reed Tucker devotes a long article to it. One tidbit is particularly terrific. Director Stanley Kubrick and the two stars shared a fear of flying. When it came time to begin filming in the UK, they traveled by sea! Here's a shot of Gary Lockwood & Keir Dullea trying to keep a secret from Hal:

The Masters is underway. The bulk of its drama usually occurs during the final nine on Sunday. Today's round provided a rare occurrence. Defending champion Sergio Garcia hit five straight shots into the pond that guards the front of the 15th, shooting a 13, the highest score ever on the par five that yields so many birdies. It also ties the highest score on any hole at Augusta National. Tom Weiskopf made a 13 at the par-three 12th in 1980, while Tsuneyuki Nakajima suffered that fate on the 13th in 1978. Garcia currently stands next to last, shooting an 81, nine shots over par. He may have to shoot a record score tomorrow to make the cut. Tiger Woods is at plus-one, five shots back at the moment. Several players have yet to complete the round as of 4:48 EST. Here's the hole in question:

I wonder how many of the NYC residents protesting Mayor de Blasio's plan to spread 90 shelters throughout the five boroughs voted for him. He received 66% of the vote in 2017. Given his Marxist views, how is anyone surprised by any of his proposals? The city is getting what it deserves. There is no such thing as Not in My Back Yard in Red Billy's world.

It felt more like late February today, a cold wind whipping along Avenue Z. I decided to stay rather than go to my alternate site. I hoped Ira would show, and he did, buying ten more books in the Weird series, including the New York version. My thanks, and also to the local home attendant who settled her tab, and to the gentleman who purchase a collection of audio books in Russian; and to Al the Mensch, who donated a bunch of books and still insisted on paying for a collection of essays by George Will. Thanks also to local porter Robert, who donated a box full of non-fiction, and to the gentleman who pulled his SUV to the curb and surrendered a cache that included children's books and several hardcover novels in Russian.
