The Writer's Life 2/22 - Around the Horn

Kudos to Marco Rubio for appearing before the hostile crowd at last night's forum sponsored by CNN. Given the network's track record, he had to know he would get a lot of heat, and he stood up to it.

A New York economic development agency report meant to show the state's growth was illustrated with an eight-year-old photo showing construction cranes in South Africa. Sadly, this is not at all surprising in a state that thinks having the highest taxes in the nation is sound economic policy.

Creative thinking gone bonkers: Authorities say a Massachusetts trolley driver paid a man $2,000 to attack him so that he could file for workers' compensation and disability insurance. The attacker wore a Halloween mask. The amount of fraud perpetrated in the USA is staggering, and it seems much of it is ignored. Will this guy be fired and lose his pension? One can never be sure in even the most egregious cases. How many NY pols are collecting despite malfeasance?

And the much needed laugh of the day comes from the Weird But True column in today's NY Post, edited by yours truly: Chinese officials are cracking down on obscene and vulgar performances at funerals. In rural provinces strippers have been hired to attract large crowds to honor the dead. I've always thought the wake of someone who has lived a long life should be a celebration, but this may be taking the idea just a tad too far.

I lucked into the most favorable parking spot this morning, which enabled me to open the floating book shop. The scaffold kept the occasional drizzle out. My thanks to the gentleman who bought two books in Russian. Ol' Smoky made an appearance for the first time in a long while. He rambled on in his inimitable scatter shot way. At one point he spoke of a time he appeared before a judge, telling her: "I believe in life and liberty but not happiness." He examined the display closely and pulled out a book on hiking trails. He offered me a dollar. Thinking it might be the only one I earned on such a raw day, I took it, then handed it back when he said it was his last one.
