The Writer's Life 2/1 - Angels & Demons

To release or not to release the memo - that is the question.
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to risk undermining the public's
trust in government or to take arms against a sea of malfeasance
and by opposing end it. Actually there's a bit more to it than that.
I think the memo should be made public. The USA has survived
the assassination of JFK, the ugliness of the Vietnam War protest,
the inanity of the Watergate break in and stupidity of the cover up,
the Iran-Contra affair, Lewinsky, and the war on terror nasty
exchanges. One question for those who want it suppressed: if it is
faulty and biased, therefore damaging to those who framed it, why
not let it be released? I suppose they would say it would besmirch
the reputation of innocents or that it threatens national security.
Would that be the case if the charges are as easily refuted as they
claim? This looks like a stalemate. The most partisan on each side
will stick to their guns, the vast majority in the middle will probably
view it as business as usual at the swamp. I'd be surprised if this
went anywhere. Even proof that the previous administration used
the phony Russian dossier to justify spying on Trump, it will be
rationalized easily: We didn't know it was fake. What will this
controversy do to the chances of The Post winning an Oscar for its
portrayal of the "bravery" it took to publish The Pentagon Papers,
which revealed nothing common sense hadn't already figured out?
Then again, those folks were on the side of the angels, while the
memo's framers are evil. Whatever.

Berkshire-Hathaway, JP Morgan Chase and Amazon are considering
teaming up to provide health care. Here's hoping they run it as well as
they do their main businesses. If it flies and other firms follow suit, it
may prevent government sponsored health care from ever getting off
the ground - and that's a great thing.

QB Kirk Cousins, formerly of the Redskins, is a free agent. The Jets
should make him an offer he can't refuse. He has three years
experience as a starter and has posted solid numbers. The drawback
is that he seems to be universally despised. If I were he, I'd sign with
the Broncos, whose recent history is excellent, while that of Gang
Green's and the Browns' has been woeful.

RIP Oscar Gamble, 68, who in 17 MLB seasons hit 200 home runs.
He played for several teams and had two stints with the Yankees.
His major claim to fame is that he was a character who kept everyone
loose. Well done, sir.

The NCAA is considering allowing athletes to transfer without having
to sit out the following season. I think it's good, as long as the student
has amassed a certain amount of course credits. proving his serious
about education.

My thanks to the gentleman who purchased the massive hardcover
Mississippi Blood by Greg Iles and two paperback thrillers, and to Ira,
who bought an Ed Koch bio; and to the elderly woman who selected
Still Waters by Tammy Hoag.
