The Writer's Life 6/1 - Mystery

The other night I was listening to an itunes stream of late 60's, early 70's music. A song by a female captured me on first listen. I'm guessing she is black. Foolishly, I didn't write the info down. The main lyric was "Save me" and it was mid to up tempo. When I finished what I was doing I went to the source of the feed, Live 365, joined and tracked down the station. The playlist went back only a few tracks. I tried youtube, where there were plenty of cuts under that title. Only one came close, but it's by a modern artist. Disappointed, I asked my buddy Bags, an expert on the era. He is unfamiliar with it, but did some research and came up with Joan Armatrading. Alas, it's not that one, either. On Saturday I asked author Bill Brown, who suggested Bonnie Bramlett of Delaney and Bonnie fame. If it was her, she did it fronting another band. It's amazing how certain works of art can fall through the cracks. I would love to hear that track again to see if it would sound as good. I hope the station didn't veer from its format for it.

After several treadmill-like episodes, AD, The Bible Continues, has gained momentum, and it's because Caligula is visiting Judea. It's not his notorious proclivities that are interesting, but the fear his madness puts in everyone, and the complete bafflement on how to deal with it. The part is played by a Brit, Andrew Gower, who has worked almost exclusively in TV. I'd never seen him prior to this. The other intriguing aspect is the influence the wives of Pilate and Caiaphas have on their husbands. Of course, there's no way of knowing if this was actually the case. The suspicion is that it's a concession to the modern audience, as is the number of black cast members, notably those portraying Mary Magdalene and the apostle John. British vets Joanne Whalley and Jodhi May are excellent as the spouses of the powerful men.

After spectacular weather in May, June has begun on a gloomy note. It gave me a chance to redeem the three bags of recyclables that had piled up in the apartment, and to clean the floor. I looked out the window at two and saw that the ground was dry. I did the book shop for an hour, sold a couple, and decided not to tempt the weather gods any longer. My thanks to Paisano, who bought a paperback romance, and the young woman who purchased Steve Martin's novel, An Object of Beauty.
